Welcome to Mass Music – a blog where I share the music I have written for the Catholic Mass and liturgical celebrations, plus various reflection songs for the Christian heart.
This blog will take full advantage of web audio and web video, ideally presenting you with music in both streaming video and downloadable formats, alongside notated music pieces, lyric sheets and chords. In short, it will hopefully be a resource that musical directors can use in order to find new music for their choirs and congregations to sing.
Hopefully it inspires you to keep singing for the Lord!

Mr. Valdellon,
I came across your site accidentally, perhaps, providentially. I would like to respectfully offer a brief bit of constructive criticism. Basically, it would seem to me that much, if not all, of the music you compose for Holy Mass is not sacred music. As you may know, the Church has repeatedly emphasized what type of music is proper for Mass – it also has said that Gregorian chant must be given pride of place (Sacrosanctum Concilium). If you have not already, I urge you to investigate this matter further so that you may think with the mind of the Church. A link to a quick video produced by Corpus Christi Watershed is provided below.

Hello John,
Thank you so much for bringing this up as it has been something I've been struggling with myself.
You're perfectly correct in saying that most of the music on my website isn't sacred music — and that if it is to be used at Mass, it SHOULD be sacred music. I agree Gregorian chant should have pride of place in the Mass. Unfortunately, I've never served in a parish that had it and am at a loss how to go about it.
I need to indeed spend time learning how to compose, not to mention notate, sacred music.
Thank you for the links. God bless!

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree that it should ONLY be Gregorian-type music that is sung in the mass. If I've learned anything, it's that the Church is alive and therefore susceptible to some sort of evolution and one of those avenues is thru music. If singing more secular-sounding music will bring more people into the church and have them participate more, then by all means play on.

Arjay,
Thanks for your input, as always. Maybe my future lies in incorporating elements of chant into pop chord structures? Not sure yet. But stay tuned.
While it's true that the Church is always growing, I do agree that there should be a clear line between music for parties and music for the liturgy. Perhaps as I learn more and more about my faith and the church, I become more "conservative" — if that's even the right term — in terms of music, liturgy and obedience to church instruction.
